November in Portland is something special, and for a few more weeks, we still get to enjoy dry sidewalks and sunshine. But, as every Portlander knows, the rainy season is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to encourage kids to get outside and enjoy the season before the clouds roll in.
Outdoor Time Is More Than Just Fun
We often think of outdoor play as a nice break from routine, but it’s also a key component of healthy childhood development and can be a valuable asset to routine. Research shows that spending time in nature is associated with better physical health, stronger emotional regulation, and even improved academic performance. A study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology found that exposure to green spaces is linked to reduced stress and better attention spans in children. Even short periods of time spent outdoors can help reset their brains and bodies after a long day of structured learning in the classroom.
In other words: letting kids run, explore, and play freely outside isn’t just good for them, it’s necessary.
Make the Most of It
You don’t have to let the rain stop you! Just because the rainy season is coming doesn’t mean outdoor time has to end. With the right gear kids can still enjoy the outdoors year-round. In fact, embracing the elements can be part of the adventure. Many programs continue outdoor activities even in colder months, teaching kids how to stay active and curious no matter the weather. It's a mindset we love: nature isn't something to escape from, it's something to embrace.
At School’s Out, our goal is to make afterschool and non-school day care easier for families, especially care that gets kids moving and engaging with the world around them. Many of our partner programs incorporate outdoor time into their daily routines, whether it’s nature-based learning, outdoor games, or just time to explore in the PNW. Check out camps from Trackers Earth and Portland Outdoor Explorers for year round outdoor excursions.
