The holidays are a season of light, joy, and connection. They are a time when families gather, reflect, and celebrate what matters most. This time of year also offers a beautiful opportunity to teach one of life’s most valuable lessons: the joy of giving back.
Between baking cookies, attending school performances, and planning family gatherings, finding time to give back might seem challenging. But even small acts of kindness can make a big impact, especially when families do them together. Volunteering during the holidays not only strengthens our communities, but it also builds gratitude, empathy, and a sense of togetherness.
The Value of Community Engagement
The holiday season often inspires generosity, and there are so many hands-on ways to put that feeling into action. For children, helping others nurtures empathy and emotional well-being. Research shows that kids and teens who volunteer experience better mental and physical health as well as stronger connections to their communities (UTH).

A Gift That Keeps Giving
Volunteering is a great way to connect with the Portland community and make everyday moments more meaningful. It’s a way for families to connect, grow, and make a difference together. When kids take part in local projects, they learn that kindness, empathy, and service aren’t just nice ideas, they’re ways to help our city grow stronger and more connected, especially during the holiday season.
